B.D. Karve Research and Consultancy Cell

History
Late B.D. Karve Research and Consultancy Cell was established on 10th May 2005. It works under the aegis of the Karve Institute of Social Services, which is a pioneer institution in the field of social work education and training.

The Cell though independent of Karve Institute of Social Services – College of Social Wok, is closely associated with the academic curriculum of the College, as in providing the opportunity for the students to explore their competencies in field work for such of the areas directly under the aegis of the Cell. Besides, the members of the Cell facilitate the learning processes undertaken by the College.

The Cell has evolved for itself a learning organization ambience that results into a knowledge management centre for those who desire to get into policy, advocacy study and pursue higher standards of research in the field. Such a spectrum involves investment in time and the cell is poised to take these challenges for.

Vision:
In the environment, the process of change is accompanied with speed. Coping with this calibrated change itself is a challenge. We visualize creating creative coping mechanisms, theorizing the social sciences as one of its future plans of action, for the change processes, in all the plans that we undertake.

Mission:
To make a difference in the lives of individuals, communities and thereby society, by collating, researching, documenting and working on experiences that will create the theory for social sciences.

Objectives:

To do the research in social work and social development.
To provide consultancy services in the area of social work, social problems, community development, and urban and rural development and to the corporate sector.
To undertake the evaluation and capacity building programme for the organizations involved in social work and social development activities as well as for the corporate sector.
To initiate and conduct wide range of social services such as counselling rehabilitation programmes and social educational programmes.
To collaborate, associate with the organization, association, and institutes having similar objectives to undertake social work activities. Such other projects or activities in furtherance of aims and objectives of the institute.
To provide an opportunity to faculty and staff to enhance their skills and expertise and hone their skills by assigning them with the project or involve them in consultancy and other activities.

FIELD ACTION PROJECTS
The Cell has been initiating field action projects with a view to provide community and the interactive interventions and the field-training opportunity to the postgraduate students of Social Work. Many of these projects offer professional services to the various client groups.

Karve Nagar Community Centre

The project was initiated both as a placement opportunity for the students and in response to the felt need for pre-primary education centre for better enrolment and retention in the schools. The centre came into existence with the Balwadi or Pre- school for the children from the lower economic group with the support from Inner Wheel Club, Pune. Later on other programmes emerged out of the student’s observations and faculty’s initiative. Inner Wheel Club, Pune for long time, supported the Balwadi programme. It is now completely self-supporting.

Karve Nagar Community Centre undertakes Community outreach programmes that seek to organize the community based activities and programmes based on expressed needs of women, youth, children and aged through facilitating the development of the community based groups and networking with other agencies.

Family Counselling Centre

This is Project of Department of Women and Child welfare under Maharashtra State Social Welfare Board.

Family Counselling Centre works to deal with the problem of domestic violence against the women and children and to provide counselling, legal aid, referral and rehabilitative services to the victims of domestic violence.

The centre offers pre-marital counselling services to the youths at the college and community level, organizes legal literacy camps for the women in rural areas and urban communities.

The centre has regular liaison with the Social Security cell established in the Police Commissioner’s Office and the short stay shelter homes for women and children in Pune.

Centre for Development of Appropriate Trade Skills
(C-DATS)

C-DATS Centre was established in 1995 with the help of the Special Grants Project of the Rotary International.

In 1997 in collaboration with Inter-Aide, France, the Loan disbursement activity for income generation was started in the Market yard area for women and youth. This project provided vocational training to the youth in the community and job placements after training. The Centre at Market yard has disbursed loans to about 300 beneficiaries in order to set up small business enterprises.

Since inception, more than 5000 youths have been trained in various vocations such as tailoring, leather bags making, computer literacy, fashion designing, book biding, beauty parlour and typing. Exhibitions are held in order to give an impetus to entrepreneurs by way of providing a platform to them.

CHILDLINE

This is a project of department of Women and Child Welfare CHILDLINE is a 24Hrs help line for the children in crisis and distress. Institute is involved in this project as a Nodal Organization.
Institute assumes the responsibility of training, campaigning, documentation, advocacy and research. Institute is involved in the networking with all the support organizations and allied systems such as Police, Juvenile Justice System and Media.

CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING PROGRAMMES UNDERTAKEN
The Cell has always believed that capacity building is an ongoing process, which equips enhances the development of worker’s capacities to meet the emerging challenges. Hence the Cell is actively involved in training programmes on a regular basis for the Social Work Educators, Professionals, functionaries of the Central and State Government institutions and NGOs, Paraprofessionals and grass root level workers.

RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES

The Cell undertakes Research and Consultancy services in the field of social work, social development, Women and child welfare, adult education, welfare of marginalized population, health care, social education, Corporate Social Responsibility and other related fields. The Institute has been undertaking such contract research since 1970.

Such assignments are accepted in collaboration with Central and the State Government Institutions, NGOs, Social Work Educators, industrial houses, UNICEF, and other national and international consultants.

These research projects, help in formulating, modifying governmental policies in matters of education and health at the state as well as national levels. In this regard the Institute has had prolonged association with the Central Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Welfare and their parallel ministries in the State Government.
